About the Watchers of the Throne series

Watchers of the Throne follows the Adeptus Custodes and Sisters of Silence defending the Golden Throne on Terra in the immediate aftermath of the Indomitus Crusade, as the Imperium reels from the opening of the Great Rift. The Emperor's Legion (2017) centres on Custodian Valerian and Sister Aleya as internal Imperial politics and external threats converge on Terra itself, while a nightmarish force -- a vast, sourceless daemonic incursion -- rises from beneath the Throneworld. The Regent's Shadow (2020) continues directly from its predecessor as the surviving protagonists confront the political fallout and a lingering enemy presence within Terra's own defences.

The series is one of Chris Wraight's two major contemporary Warhammer 40,000 series alongside Vaults of Terra, both set on or around Terra in the same post-Indomitus period, though following different protagonists and institutions.

Frequently asked questions

How many books are in Watchers of the Throne?

Two novels have been published: The Emperor's Legion (2017) and The Regent's Shadow (2020). Author Chris Wraight indicated in a 2018 interview that he had plans for a third book and beyond 'if there's an appetite', but no further volume has been announced or released as of this catalogue's August 2026 curation.

Is Watchers of the Throne connected to Vaults of Terra?

They're both Chris Wraight series set on Terra in the same broad post-Indomitus era, but follow different protagonists (Adeptus Custodes and Sisters of Silence here, versus an Inquisitorial investigator in Vaults of Terra) and can be read independently of each other.
