Karen Pirie starts the series as a detective constable assigned to Scotland's Historic Cases Unit -- a backwater posting for cold cases nobody expects to be solved -- and grows across eight books into one of British crime fiction's most durable working-class investigators, promoted, sidelined, reinstated, and repeatedly proven right by colleagues who underestimate her. The opening novel, The Distant Echo (2003), reopens a decades-old student murder in St Andrews; from there the series keeps returning to the same idea, that old crimes don't stay buried and the people who think they've gotten away with something are never as safe as they believe.
McDermid lets real time pass between books -- five years separate the first two novels, six years separate the second and third -- and Karen's personal life (bereavement, a difficult relationship with police hierarchy, and later a genuine domestic partnership) develops in step with the cold cases she keeps cracking. Since Val McDermid wound down new Tony Hill/Carol Jordan novels after 2019, Karen Pirie has become her flagship ongoing series, and it was adapted for British television (ITV, from 2022) under the character's own name, with Lauren Lyle in the title role.
