The Millennium series by Stieg Larsson has 8 books and is best read in publication order, starting with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005).
Start here: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005) — then read straight through in publication order.
The order the books were released — the default way to read the series.
The Millennium series pairs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist with Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant, traumatised hacker and one of crime fiction's most distinctive protagonists -- ward of the state, survivor of institutional abuse, and utterly ruthless toward anyone who threatens her narrow circle of trust. Stieg Larsson's original trilogy, published posthumously after his sudden death in 2004, fuses journalistic-thriller plotting (corporate corruption, trafficking, Cold War-era conspiracy) with a sustained, furious indictment of violence against women, then detonates it through Salander's own history of abuse and revenge. The series became a publishing phenomenon and, after Larsson's estate authorised David Lagercrantz to continue it, then Karin Smirnoff, has kept going well past the original trilogy -- each subsequent author bringing a somewhat different tone while keeping Blomkvist and Salander's core dynamic intact.
The appeal is maximalist Scandinavian thriller writing: intricate conspiracies, hacking and surveillance tradecraft, journalistic procedure, and a genuinely radical antihero in Salander. It's for readers who want their Nordic noir sprawling and socially furious rather than quiet and melancholic, and it's the basis for both a Swedish film trilogy and the English-language film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011).
There are 8 Millennium novels: the original trilogy by Stieg Larsson (2005-2007), three continuations by David Lagercrantz (2015-2019), and two so far by Karin Smirnoff (2022-2025).
Publication order, starting with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005). The story of Mikael Blomkvist and Lisbeth Salander continues in sequence across all three authors' books.
Karin Smirnoff has indicated she will write at least one further book, but no title or release date had been confirmed as of August 2026.
Stieg Larsson died in 2004, before the original trilogy was published. The Larsson estate later authorised David Lagercrantz to continue the series (books 4-6), and Karin Smirnoff has continued it since (books 7 onward).
The core Blomkvist/Salander story and supporting cast continue across all eight books regardless of author, so reading in publication order from book 1 is recommended even though each author brings a different tone.
