About the Deer Lake series
Set in the small, tight-knit town of Deer Lake, Minnesota, this two-book series opens with Night Sins (1995), in which the son of a locally prominent family is abducted after hockey practice, pulling in small-town sheriff Mitch Holt and BCA agent Megan O'Malley as the investigation exposes the town's buried secrets. Guilty as Sin (1996) continues directly from the fallout of that case: a second boy disappears just as the town's uneasy conviction that police caught the wrong man for the first crime starts to unravel, with assistant county attorney Ellen North and true-crime novelist Jay Butler Brooks central to the follow-up investigation.
Night Sins became Hoag's first New York Times bestseller and is generally regarded as the book where her suspense fiction fully arrived -- Hoag has said every one of her books since has been a bestseller.
