About the Alvirah and Willy series

Alvirah Meehan is a former cleaning woman from Queens who wins $40 million in the New York State lottery, and her husband Willy is the plumber she's been married to for decades -- an unglamorous, warm-hearted amateur-detective duo Mary Higgins Clark introduced as supporting characters in Weep No More, My Lady (1987) and spun off into their own series once readers latched onto them. Alvirah's instinct for other people's secrets (honed as a cleaning lady who saw how the wealthy actually lived) and her habit of wearing a lottery-winnings splurge -- a sunburst pin fitted with a hidden tape recorder -- make her a genuinely different kind of sleuth than Clark's usual younger, glamorous heroines in peril: middle-aged, unpretentious, and entirely too curious for her own good. The four holiday-set entries from Deck the Halls (2000) onward are written jointly with Clark's daughter Carol Higgins Clark and crossover directly with Carol's own Regan Reilly series, pairing Alvirah and Willy with Regan and her parents for a wider ensemble mystery each Christmas.
