About the Henrie O series

Henrietta "Henrie O" O'Dwyer Collins is a retired newspaper reporter in her seventies -- widowed, sharp-tongued, and constitutionally incapable of staying out of a mystery once she senses one. Carolyn Hart introduced her in Dead Man's Island (1993) as a change of pace from the bookshop-set Death on Demand series: instead of a cozy small-town setting, Henrie O investigates wherever her restless curiosity and journalistic instincts take her, from a private island off the Carolina coast to riverside San Antonio to a cruise ship in Set Sail for Murder. Her decades as a foreign correspondent give her a global network of old contacts and a reporter's nose for the detail everyone else has missed.

Where the Death on Demand books lean warm and puzzle-driven, the Henrie O novels are a shade darker and more character-driven, often built around long-buried secrets, old grudges, and the kind of small-scale institutional cover-ups a lifetime of asking hard questions has trained Henrie O to spot. She's an unconventional amateur sleuth for the genre -- older, unmarried, financially independent, and openly unimpressed by people who underestimate her because of her age -- which was part of what made the series stand out when Hart launched it in the early 1990s.

Seven novels were published between 1993 and 2007, a shorter run than Hart's flagship Death on Demand series, but a distinct and self-contained body of work with its own recurring cast: Henrie O's granddaughter and namesake Diana, occasional romantic interest, and a rotating gallery of the wealthy, secretive families she keeps getting pulled into investigating.
