About The Elenium

The Elenium introduces Sparhawk, a battle-scarred Pandion Knight recalled from ten years of exile to find the queen he serves, Ehlana, poisoned into a magical coma by a rival sorceress and encased in enchanted crystal that's slowly killing her. With his queen's fading life as a ticking clock, Sparhawk assembles a mismatched party of knights from rival militant church orders -- men trained to distrust each other on principle -- alongside the ancient, foul-tempered Styric sorceress Sephrenia, to search for a legendary healing relic, the Bhelliom, across a kingdom riddled with church politics and a rising cult devoted to a rival, distinctly more sinister god. It's a more grounded, adult register than the Belgariad -- Sparhawk is older, wearier, and more cynical than Garion ever was, and the central relationship, a queen who's still a teenager ruling through a council of manipulative nobles while her champion works to save her, carries more emotional weight than pure adventure. Eddings again leans on the interplay of a found-family ensemble cast for much of the book's charm, but the Elenium's stakes feel more personal and immediate than the Belgariad's continent-spanning prophecy, built as it is around saving one specific person rather than fulfilling an ancient destiny. It set the template -- knightly religious orders, a magic system built on named schools of sorcery, a central relic quest -- that the sequel trilogy, The Tamuli, would directly continue.

Frequently asked questions

What order should I read The Elenium in?

Publication order: The Diamond Throne, The Ruby Knight, The Sapphire Rose. It's one continuous story across three books.

Do I need to read the Belgariad before The Elenium?

No -- The Elenium is a separate story set in a different kingdom with its own cast, and requires no prior Eddings reading.

Is The Elenium connected to The Tamuli?

Yes -- The Tamuli is a direct sequel trilogy continuing Sparhawk's story with the same characters, and should be read after finishing The Elenium.

Who is the main character of The Elenium?

Sparhawk, a veteran Pandion Knight who returns from exile to save his poisoned queen, Ehlana.

Is The Elenium credited to David Eddings alone?

At original publication (1989-1991) it was credited to David Eddings alone; Leigh Eddings was not formally credited as co-author until Belgarath the Sorcerer in 1995, though she's since been widely acknowledged as an uncredited collaborator on his earlier work too.
