About the Savannah Quartet series

The Savannah Quartet follows the real Browning, Mackay and Stiles families of Savannah, Georgia, from the War of 1812 through the Civil War era. It opens with Mark Browning, a young man who comes under the mentorship of real Savannah merchant Robert Mackay and his wife Eliza -- herself a descendant of the McQueen family Price had already documented in the Florida Trilogy -- and widens across the four novels into a multi-generational portrait of Savannah's merchant class and its entanglement with slavery, war, and the city's own turbulent 19th-century history. It's the most structurally ambitious of Price's series: four books following overlapping generations of the same interconnected families rather than a single continuous protagonist, with the historical emphasis deepening across the later volumes as the Mackay and Stiles family stories move toward the Civil War.
