About the Holly Barker series
Holly Barker is a former U.S. Army military police major turned small-town Florida police chief, introduced in Orchid Beach (1998) as Stuart Woods built out a female lead as capable and connected as Stone Barrington, running her own investigations into corruption and violence along Florida's fictional Orchid Beach before her career pulls her toward Washington and national security work in the later books. The series shares Woods's house style -- brisk pacing, a competence-porn hero who is always the most capable person in the room, recurring institutional connections (here the Army and, later, national security circles) -- and crosses over directly with both the Will Lee and Stone Barrington series: Reckless Abandon (2004) is a joint Stone Barrington/Holly Barker novel, and Mounting Fears (2009) closes out her arc alongside Will Lee's presidency.
