About the Caraval series

Scarlett Dragna has spent her life writing letters to the mysterious Master Legend, begging for tickets to Caraval, a once-a-year, invitation-only performance where the audience becomes part of the show. When tickets finally arrive, her wilder younger sister Tella drags her to the game just before Scarlett's arranged marriage — and then Tella is kidnapped as the game's central prize, sending Scarlett racing through five nights of illusions, riddles, and rigged rooms to find her, uncertain the whole time what's real and what's Caraval's trademark manipulation. She teams up with a charming, untrustworthy sailor named Julian, and every alliance, romance, and rescue she thinks she's pulling off might just be another layer of the game.

Stephanie Garber built the trilogy around unreliable spectacle: Caraval itself is designed to make players (and readers) question what's staged and what's genuinely at stake, and the sequels widen the lens to Tella's and then the wider cast's experiences of the game and the powerful, magical Fates who run it. It's lush, riddle-heavy, and romance-forward, closer to a fantasy heist crossed with a magic show than a straightforward adventure quest — the puzzle-box plotting and constant reversals are the main draw as much as any single character's arc.

Frequently asked questions

How many books are in the Caraval trilogy?

Three novels — Caraval, Legendary, and Finale — plus a short bonus novella, Spectacular, released in 2024.

What order should I read Caraval in?

Publication order: Caraval, Legendary, Finale. It's a continuous, twist-heavy story that needs to be read in sequence.

Is Once Upon a Broken Heart part of the Caraval series?

It's a separate series set in the same magical world, with its own cast of characters and its own trilogy-plus arc. You don't need to read Caraval first, though both share some worldbuilding and the mythology of the Fates.

Is Caraval finished?

Yes, the original trilogy is complete, closing with Finale in 2019. Stephanie Garber has continued the wider universe through the separate Once Upon a Broken Heart series rather than adding a fourth Caraval novel.

Who is Master Legend?

The enigmatic, near-mythical host of the Caraval game, whom Scarlett has corresponded with for years before finally attending — his true nature and motives are a running mystery across the trilogy.
