About the Cado Ezechiar series

John French's Cado Ezechiar series is set in the Age of Sigmar's Realm of Death, following the title character -- a Soulblight vampire who accepted his curse as his mortal kingdom fell to Chaos millennia ago, and who has wandered ever since seeking retribution and salvation for the people he failed. The Hollow King (2022) finds Cado's long hunt for the sorcerer who destroyed his realm leading him to the free city of Aventhis, where he is drawn into the machinations of powers far greater than himself. The Dead Kingdom (2024) follows his search into Lethis, capital of the Realm of Death itself, where he becomes entangled in a war fought through deception rather than open battle.

Unlike French's grimdark Warhammer 40,000 work (Ahriman, the Horusian Wars), Cado Ezechiar is fantasy-horror in tone, built around a mournful, guilt-driven antihero navigating a setting steeped explicitly in death and undeath.

Frequently asked questions

How many books are in the Cado Ezechiar series?

Two so far: The Hollow King (2022) and The Dead Kingdom (2024). No third book has been announced as of this catalogue's August 2026 curation, though the series reads as ongoing rather than concluded.

Is Cado Ezechiar connected to John French's Warhammer 40,000 books?

No. It's set in the separate Warhammer: Age of Sigmar fantasy setting, unrelated to French's 40K series like Ahriman and the Horusian Wars.

Is there a short story to read alongside The Hollow King?

Yes -- 'Beasts: The Road of the Hollow King' is a short e-short tie-in, but as a short story rather than a novel it falls outside this catalogue's scope and is not tracked here.
