About the Buckalew Family series

An early two-book Elmer Kelton series set during the Texas Revolution. Massacre at Goliad (1965) follows brothers Thomas and Joshua Buckalew as revolution builds between Mexican authorities and American settlers -- Thomas eager for war, Joshua reluctant because he loves a Mexican woman -- through the Alamo, the Goliad massacre, and the decisive Battle of San Jacinto. After the Bugles (1967) picks up exactly where it ends, on the San Jacinto battlefield, following Joshua Buckalew through the harder work of rebuilding a life and a new republic amid bandits, Comanche raids, and the war's other survivors.
