About the Auguste Lupa series

Before creating Dismas Hardy, John Lescroart wrote two historical mysteries starring Auguste Lupa, a large, brilliant, orchid-obsessed private detective in Belgian-occupied Europe and wartime France whose personal history strongly implies he is the secret son of Sherlock Holmes -- and a young man growing into the same character later reimagined, more famously, by Rex Stout as Nero Wolfe. Son of Holmes (1986) is set in 1914 as war breaks out and Lupa is drawn into a spy plot; Rasputin's Revenge (1987) moves the action to St Petersburg in the last days of the Romanov court. Both books play affectionately with Holmesian and Wolfean detective-fiction conventions while standing as accomplished historical mysteries in their own right.
