Graham McNeill's earliest fiction, The Ambassador Chronicles follows Kaspar von Velten, a retired Imperial general sent as the Emperor's ambassador to the frozen court of Tsarina Katarin in Kislev, the Warhammer Fantasy setting's answer to Tsarist Russia. The Ambassador is a fish-out-of-water political novel first -- Kaspar, a soldier by temperament, has to survive palace intrigue, blackmail and factional scheming he's genuinely unsuited for -- before the threat of Chaos forces from the northern wastes turns the story toward the battlefield he understands better.
Ursun's Teeth raises the stakes considerably: with a massed Chaos horde marching on the strategic rock formation of the title, Kaspar must rally the combined armies of the Empire and Kislev, drawing on both the diplomatic relationships he built in the first book and his own military experience. Together the two novels work as a compact origin story for a very different kind of Warhammer protagonist -- a middle-aged diplomat rather than a young warrior -- and a solid introduction to Kislev, a setting that gets far less fictional attention than the Empire or the Elves.
Two: The Ambassador (2003) and Ursun's Teeth (2004), later collected in a single omnibus of the same name.
Publication order: The Ambassador, then Ursun's Teeth. It's a single continuous story.
A retired Imperial general sent as ambassador to the court of Tsarina Katarin in Kislev, the Warhammer Fantasy setting's Russia-inspired nation -- a diplomat forced back into military command when Chaos forces threaten the region.
