Louise Penny

Louise Penny is a Canadian author best known for the Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series, a long-running literary mystery series set largely in the fictional Quebec village of Three Pines, where a tight-knit cast of eccentric locals recurs across cases investigated by the thoughtful, morally grounded Sûreté du Québec inspector Gamache. Beginning with Still Life in 2005, the series has become known for prioritizing character, atmosphere and psychological depth over pure procedural plotting, earning Penny numerous major crime-writing awards and a large devoted readership. The series was adapted for television as Three Pines, an Amazon Prime Video limited series starring Alfred Molina, which premiered in 2022. New readers should start with Still Life, since the ensemble cast of Three Pines villagers builds meaningfully across the series and rewards reading in order. Penny, a former CBC radio journalist, is noted for weaving themes of grief, art and community into what remains, at heart, classic village mystery fiction. She continues to publish new entries in the series regularly, maintaining one of the most consistent literary mystery franchises currently being written. Outside Gamache, Penny has written two standalone political thrillers, each with a co-author bringing real-world expertise: State of Terror (2021), with former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and The Last Mandarin (2026), with journalist Mellissa Fung.
