Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin has written 35 books across 3 series. Start with Jack Laidlaw.

Ian Rankin is a Scottish crime writer whose Inspector John Rebus series has become one of the defining bodies of work in modern British crime fiction, and whose Edinburgh setting -- rendered in unglamorous, atmospheric detail -- is as much a character in the books as Rebus himself. Beginning with Knots and Crosses in 1987, the series follows Rebus across three decades of Edinburgh policing, from a troubled young detective to a retired officer still pulled back into cases, aging in something close to real time alongside his readers.

Rankin studied literature at the University of Edinburgh and initially saw Rebus as a modern take on the Jekyll-and-Hyde tradition of Scottish gothic fiction before the series settled into its now-signature blend of social realism, dry humor, and slow-burn plotting. He has won virtually every major British crime-writing honor, including multiple Crime Writers' Association Daggers, and was awarded an OBE for services to literature.

A new reader should start with Knots and Crosses to meet Rebus at the beginning, though many readers jump in wherever a title catches their eye since the mysteries stand reasonably well alone. The Rebus novels have been adapted for British television twice, most recently a 2024 BBC series, and remain in print in something close to publication order worldwide.
