Author
E. L. James has written 10 books across 3 series. Start with Fifty Shades.
E. L. James is the pen name of Erika Mitchell, a British author born in London in 1963 who studied history at the University of Kent and spent years working in television production before turning to fiction in her late forties. She began writing Twilight fan fiction under the online handle "Snowqueens Icedragon" in 2009, and the resulting story -- reworked with original characters as the erotic romance the Fifty Shades trilogy -- was self-published through a small Australian publisher in 2011 before Vintage Books acquired and reissued all three books in 2012, triggering a publishing phenomenon: over 150 million copies sold worldwide and a spot on Time's 100 Most Influential People the same year. The trilogy follows literature student Anastasia Steele and controlling, damaged billionaire Christian Grey through a BDSM-inflected romance that made the genre mainstream in a way few books before it had, and James later revisited the same story three times over from Christian's point of view in Grey, Darker and Freed rather than continuing the plot forward. She followed Fifty Shades with a smaller-scale contemporary romance duology, The Mister and The Missus, and in 2026 published her first young-adult fantasy novel, Land of Ghosts, a departure from the adult erotic romance that made her name. She lives in London with her husband, novelist and screenwriter Niall Leonard, and remains an active, still-evolving author well beyond the franchise that made her famous.
